Journal
of a new Alaskan gardener...
April
13th, 2004
Okay,
so, I started my first seeds last night. I almost started them
a couple of weeks ago, when a few days of sunshine put me in
the gardening mood, but then we had that freak snow storm..
Boy,
talk about spoiling a mood... Anyway, last night I was in the
mood, and as a result I have about 5 sets of seeding pots going.
Broccoli, onions, basil, and coleus, and lavender.
And
so it begins-the spring frenzie I get as the sun starts to shine.
The air begins to warm and images of growing things drift in
my mind; while I'm working, while I'm sleeping, even while I'm
bathing, I see images of herbs spilling out of pots, poppies,
bright red, waving in the wind, I smell the scent of tarragon
as drifts of air pulls its oils and spreads it around.
Spring
is coming...

and, then I stopped by Spenards and saw the strawberries...
Did
I mention that I picked up a strawberry pot at a garage sale?
Okay, so it's one of those pots that's made of clay, with all
the holes in it-I call it a strawberry pot. Maybe it's a succelent
pot, whatever. I've seen them filled with strawberries, so that's
my plan.
My problem is the package the strawberry plants came in says
to plant them 30 inches apart, but in this pot they will only
be about 10 inches apart. Oh well, I planted one in each hole,
and two in the top. I never was one for doing it like the directions
say.
And,
what on earth am I going to do with the rest of the plants?
If I plant them in my garden, that far apart, they're going
to take up the most of the garden. Okay, so I will figure that
out tomorrow.
