Journal of a new Alaskan gardener...

May 3, 2004

Okay, I haven't done too good getting this website started. I have good intentions, it's just that life sometime gets in the way.

A little about what I've done this past month... Okay, I started my broccoli, tomatoes, basil, lavender and coleus.

They are up now, about 4 inches. Found that on the tiny seeds I put way too many in my starter cells. Thinned them last night. It sure does hurt to pull perfectly good plants out. Some of them I moved into larger pots. The broccoli were so fragile though that they didn't move too good.

We bought some strawberry plants at Spenards, put them out and they seem to be doing well. That was a couple of weeks ago. Then, yesterday we went to True Value and got squash and cabbage plants. CH got them set out as well as put some bean seeds down.

CH sure did look happy out in his little patch working on his cabbage and squash. I thought about his big garden in Florida and wondered if he would be okay with this small area, but with him being the Wolves Football Coach, maybe he'll be busy enough he won't miss the big garden too much. We'll see.

Our son noted that he hoped that we weren't too disappointed over the fact that our garden doesn't do as well here as down south. CH just humpphed and said, we'll see.

I'm thinking to myself I need to reread the slug info as to how to deal with them.

Did I mention I bought some her plants. Let's see.. spearmint, peppermint, oregano and thyme. A beginning... Day by day. We'll see how it goes. Learning as we go. Sharon
